30대 러시아 유학생 A씨는 언어 교환 앱에서 러시아어를 가르치던 중 만난 두 명의 중국 남성에게 총 7만 달러(한화 약 9천만 원)에 달하는 피해를 당했다. 

로맨스 스캠(Romance Scam) 피해를 당한 A씨는 지난해 12월, 언어 교환 앱에서 두 명의 중국 남성 B씨와 C씨를 만났다. B씨와 C씨는 온라인 플랫폼에서 가게를 운영하며 돈을 벌고 있다며 A씨에게 투자를 권했다.

당시 B씨는 A씨에게 여러 사람에게 빚을 갚는데 도움을 주고 있다며 가짜 영수증을 보여주는 등 교묘한 방법으로 A씨를 속였다. 또한 B씨는 독일 브랜드를 사용하는 플랫폼을 운영한다고 말하며 A씨의 신뢰를 얻었다.

처음에는 A씨는 B씨가 운영하는 플랫폼에서 매장을 열어 제품 판매 수익을 얻게 만들면서 신뢰를 쌓았다. 그러나 시간이 지날수록 B씨는 A씨에게 더 큰 수익을 얻으려면 더 많은 돈을 투자할 것을 요구했다. A씨는 B씨의 상품 구매와 광고 효과를 높이기 위해서는 광고 비용 등 거짓말에 현혹되어 총 7만 달러에 달하는 금액을 송금했다. 실제로 주문량도 폭주했다.
